Title: Not A Crossover, Honest
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Team: AVALANCHE
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 100
Series: Core Game sorta.

Gene manipulation was one of the better side effects of Hojo's work. It allowed childless couples to have children that were genetic offspring of both parents, even if that would normally be impossible.

That little Anthony was interested in robotics and programming was a given. Reeve and Rufus had both indulged the boy with DIY circuitboards, his own laptop, and spare parts galore.

But when Anthony used this largesse to create bionic armor, with which the twelve-year-old pounded a bully into a wall while declaring himself Just That Awesome, Rufus could only raise his hands with an amused, 'mea culpa'.

It was a record year for overtime. Of course it would have been anyway, but Reeve lost as many hours to time zone shifts as to actual crises.

Rufus did not appreciate the lack of warm fuzzy body pillow, but as President he had to keep more normal hours. This had not stopped him from making his feelings clear.

At 2 a.m., Reeve discovered his computer's wallpaper had become a picture of Rufus. Stark naked, lounging amid the silk sheets with a decidedly 'look what you're not getting' expression.

The next night, Reeve discovered it was part of a set.

Characters/Pairings: Reeve, with Cait

Series: Original

Reeve poured four fingers of single malt into a glass, and turned out the lights.

Midgar was such a beautiful place, at night. All the stars of heaven, all around. Every block a nebula of constellations.

Except Sector Seven. The dark, silent wedge made symmetrical accusations.

Reeve swallowed a mouthful of the scotch. Accurate accusations, too. Thousands, tens of thousands dead. Because he hadn't had the balls to argue with a single man.

He drank in silence, staring into the dark where stars once had been.

After a bit, Cait came to sit at his side, purring at absent pats.

"Cid? Why are you watering the cactus?"

"Piss off, cat."

"Boss, why is Cid watering the cactus? There are limited water supplies."

"This is what I get for omitting bodily functions. Cait, he's urinating. That water is undrinkable. And don't talk to people during bodily functions, in future. Cid, at the very least, might aim it at you and I don't want to have to clean it out of your fur afterward."

"Filing: Bodily Functions, Cross-reference, Do Not Disturb conditions. Why do I not talk to people during bodily functions?"

"Please add additional cross reference, Cait, under Human Privacy Issues."

"But why?" asked Cait, over the private band. "She hasn't done anything wrong."

Reeve sighed at his desk, fingers massaging his forehead. "It's called blackmail," he answered. "She didn't have to do anything wrong. She doesn't have to understand it. The point is that Barret does. It's not about her, you see. It's about him."

He didn't like having to explain this to Cait. He hadn't built Cait to know about this aspect of human nature. And the cat was definitely having trouble with it. "We're not going to hurt her, are we?"

"Not if Barret gives us a choice."

Reeve sat in a chair, with Cait on his lap. Rufus mirrored him, but with a live dark-nation cub, its little tentacles wrapping and unwrapping around his fingers as he stroked its fur.

Cait projected the news of the week from its eyes, onto a handy white wall, and the two men watched and listened to the feed.

"The problem I'm seeing here," Rufus noted, "Is that nobody actually knows the full extent of Hojo's experiments. No record exists, no memory. Just some very angry results."

"For now we'll just use Cait's memory banks," said Reeve, and Cait purred approval.

Reeve kept to himself, at least in person. There were all sorts of little programs (not kept on his own hard drive, of course) that let him know the general pulse of the company, but in person he would nod, smile, and be polite even if Scarlet mistook it for an invitation.

One such notification was waiting for him after a trip to the water cooler. It simply said, Thomas Prufrock: Contract of Employment Terminated.

Reeve sighed and set his cup of water down, and went to get coffee instead. Red meant the 'termination' had been via lethal injury.

Reeve stared, jaw dropped. "No. Absolutely not."

Reno grinned. "Oh, come on. D'you have any idea what the profits would be on a calendar like that?"

Reeve pushed the chair back unconsciously, needing the distance. "You couldn't possibly have gotten Rufus' permission. "Men of Shin-Ra Nude Calendar"? You can't have -"

Reno took a few photos from his jacket pocket, slid them across the table. "I'll say this for him, he honors his bets."

Reeve took one look - the photos were quite explicit - and facepalmed. "Well, I haven't made any bet..."

Reno displayed a signed memo. "Boss's orders."

The salesman startled badly when Reeve walked through the door. Frozen, with a rictus of a customer-service smile on his face, he waited for the man to realize he was in the wrong place and walk back out. People in Reeve's position did not frequent pet stores.

But Reeve did not walk out. Instead, he made his way to the cages of kittens, carried them all to the playroom, and let them out at once. One of the rulers of the world, he sat on the floor with a beatific smile as he let kittens happily climb all over him.

Title: Spying on the Big Screen
Characters/Pairings: Reeve, Cait Sith
Team: Turks
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: This week's was such a gimme for my favorite character, I couldn't resist.

Reeve yawned and absently reached for his coffee, leaning back in his chair. It was really the only point to coming home, these days - office chairs weren't meant for relaxing in, and the coffee was a lot worse. At home he could watch comfortably, on a larger screen, and take notes without worrying too much about invading Turks or superiors.

On the screen that in other homes would have been broadcasting the local entertainment options, Reeve watched Avalanche through Cait Sith's eyes and sipped his coffee.

Thank Ramuh they don't have sex lives, he mused. That'd be awkward.

Title: Meeting Rufus
Characters/Pairings: Reeve, Rufus
Rating/Type: G
Team: Turks
Word Count: 100

Reeve's first company picnic wasn't quite what he'd expected. Competitive sports, or walking tours, or something like that maybe. Not catered lunches served by...well, apparently, pole-dancers. But the weather was good and a park in spring was always a welcome break, and he was prepared to enjoy the day.

A little boy caught his eye. He thought at first it was a local child, but - no, far too well-dressed, a good mother would never send her son to the park in clothes too fine to play in. Eleven or so, blond, and...angry. The boy could surely only be Rufus....

Title: Old notes (#153 - Written)
Characters/Pairings: Reeve
Rating/Type: G

Word Count: 100

Reeve tried to keep a neat desk, but the daily business of a department head generated a lot of paperwork. Organized piles never seemed to survive a single visit from Reno, and files got misplaced.

To resurface when, inevitably, Reeve tried to clean off his desk during one of the rare periods he had an hour free.

He held the memo in his hand, leaning back in his chair. It was an old memo. Sent to all staff the day Rufus had been sent to Junon...what a fight that had been, audible all across the floor.

Written orders, written records...

Title: Sufficient Kittens
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G

Word Count: 100

Kittens were a rambunctious sort of pain, Reeve knew quite well, but Dark Nation kittens were a completely new ball of wax.

It was the tentacles, really, he mused as Rufus went to get the cure materia. The kitten's little tentacles could leave nasty welts. And of course, convincing the little monster that his hand wasn't lunch and therefore shouldn't be gnawed on was also hurting a bit.

"How did you train the first one?" Reeve asked, as Rufus carefully pried the little thing off Reeve's hand and offered it a bowl of meat.

Rufus grinned. "You don't train kittens."

Rufus entered the office to find Reeve staring at a report in utter dejection. "...Do I really want to know?"

"It's Cid," said Reeve, pushing the report across his desk toward Rufus. "He was testing a new rocket. We're not sure what went wrong yet; it may take years for the debris to fall out of orbit."

Rufus paused; he'd never much liked the old codger, but it was still not a good time to ask how steep the investment loss was. "So...Cid died in space?" he asked carefully.

"It would seem he arranged for his own funeral," Reeve agreed.

Reeve emerged, covered in plaster dust, from the hole the mog had made in the Shin-Ra building's wreckage. The first thing he did was scoop up Cait for a grateful hug, and the little robot cat purred happily. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

"I thought he was supposed to be with Avalanche," said Reno, leaning on a shovel. "But he turned up and threatened to claw my face off unless we got a team together to dig you out."

"If yer god gave ye skritches you'd do the same," purred Cait, tucking his furry head under Reeve's bearded chin.

They walked among the cages of the great cats, absently sipping on frozen lemonade. "You should get out into the daylight more often," mused Rufus. "Get some color."

Reeve slanted a look at his lover. And his pristine white suit, and his pristine white coat. And then back to the cats in their cages. "A little cat fur is always an acceptable accent."

"Not on my suits," Rufus replied primly, as behind him one of the panthers started washing itself.

Reeve laughed, liberated a navy silk scarf from under Rufus' jacket lapels, and draped it around his neck. "All relative."

"I suppose it's still better him than you, but..." Reeve sighed, pushing the tabloid away.

"Rude generally has a talk with him about it," Rufus shrugged, wrapping fingers around his morning coffee.

Reeve, still caffeinating himself, blinked. The cover of the tabloid displayed Reno, nude and painted in vivid shades of colored body latex, with different colored cocktails in either hand, surrounded by dancers. "...This happens a lot?"

Rufus drank some of his coffee and studied the cover again. "It's been worse," he decided. "He's wearing paint this time."

Reeve decided a refill was in order. "Turks are very strange."

Title: The Road of Self-Discovery
Characters/Pairings: Cloud
Team: Turks
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Series: post-game, pre-Advent Children
Author's Notes: Honestly, I think Cloud being emo is like the Planet running a fever; symptom of Bad Things.

Cloud enjoyed the long hours between stops, running messages town to town. It meant, among other things, not having to hang around and answer questions about himself, or Sephiroth, or Meteor. Or the crater where they'd all converged.

Most people didn't understand. He hadn't, in the end, fought Sephiroth to save the world, or be a hero, or any of that. He'd just wanted his own mind back, in his own body, and the chance to find out ...who he was, really, when not trying to live up to outside standards.

Reeve seemed to be the only one that understood.

Title: Prioritizing
Characters/Pairings: Reeve

Rating: G
Word Count: 100

Reeve sifted through reports, sorting them into piles of priority.

First pile, casualty reports. SOLDIER, Shin-Ra employees and staff. A significant portion of his budget went toward the families of fallen employees, but it wasn't right to just ignore them.

Second pile, urgent requests from reactor staff. There went the rest of the budget.

Third pile, requests from reactor staff that weren't yet urgent, which would be checked against next quarter's urgent requests.

Fourth pile, civic requests from nonprofits. For the most part that was putting animal shelters in touch with orphanages; rescue cats became orphanage cats, orphans got pets.

Title: The last moments
Characters/Pairings: Tseng
Rating/Type: PG-13 I guess, for gore?
Team: Turks
Word Count: 100 words
Author's Notes: The temple of the Ancients was not a good day for Tseng.

Slow, deep breaths. Stay awake; that was important. Keep the pressure constant, hold the wound closed.

It was neither the first nor last time Tseng had had to hold his own guts in, waiting for someone to come. The important thing was to stay calm, and stay awake. Don't increase the heart rate, don't decrease pressure on the wound.

Slow, deep breaths. Try not to think about where the others are, or if they'll arrive in time (or if the right others will arrive first). The quiet, zen-like stillpoint that was the essence of patience was the key to survival.
