Title: A Hero Dies But Once
Challenge: Fate Worse Than Death
Author: GuiltyRed
Rating: PG
Characters: Zack, Kunsel
Team: SOLDIER
Word Count: 100
A/N: Joudama, I blame you. I wanted to write something fluffy, but got clobbered with this one instead. (Seriously – thank you for real, for inspiring me. It’s been way too long.)

Kunsel tried not to think about anything beyond the moment. He tried not to remember summers and fishing and leaping into the swimming hole like a couple of monkeys, or ghost stories and laughing eyes and the promises between best friends. He tried to believe that this was necessary, for the greater good somehow in a world gone mad.

As he pulled the trigger with a hundred other marksmen, he told himself that Zack, in death, would be at peace, while he would have to go on living with the cowardice of following a bad order. Mercifully, he was wrong.

A/N: Pre-game, during the war in Wutai.

"Angeal's being shipped back to Midgar," Genesis said tersely.

Sephiroth rubbed his temple, glad Genesis couldn't see it.

"He's being shunted sideways. They can't demote him. So they're sending him to baby-sit baby SOLDIERs," Genesis said disgustedly. "Why?"

"Someone has to train the new recruits. He'll be good at it."

"There's no glory in that! And I need him here!"

"I know," Sephiroth said softly.

"...you did this. Why?!"

"Have you spoken to him lately?"

"No. Gwongnaam's still hot."

"I have," Sephiroth said. And it's because the war won't kill him, he thought. What it has done is worse.

Characters: Cloud, Hojo

Prompt: Fate worse than death

"Oh, good. You're awake," a man in glasses says, and smiles.

Cloud blinks, slowly, but can't manage more than that, and not only because he's strapped down to a table.

The man picks up a needle and taps to clear air from it.

"You somehow managed to terminate my greatest experiment, something I wouldn't have thought possible of anyone, let alone a trooper. Was it just S's failing, or something about you?

"I'd hate for all my hard work to be for nothing," the man says and injects the needle into Cloud's arm, and Cloud learns he can still scream.

A/N: Come on, Turks, we can win this! :D

Endless Agony

When he woke, he was in darkness.

His limbs itched, but he couldn’t scratch for relief. His body ached, but when he tried to move, he met unyielding wood everywhere.

At the top of his lungs, he called for help and banged against the wood, but no one came. His mouth was dry from shouting. Maddening fear filled his veins. He would die of thirst in this dark, cramped space.

Every cell in his body screamed for relief until it nearly drove him insane.

After he had lost all sense of time, he came to fear Death would never come.

The game had been going at least an hour before Hojo stopped it. "What in the world do you think you're doing?"

Sephiroth held the glove balloon in both hands. The inflated fingers wagged cheekily over the face Gast had drawn. "I'm playing catch," said the boy.

"By yourself?" Hojo asked. "That's ridiculous!" And he stabbed the balloon with a pen.

Sephiroth stared at the shredded rubber for a while. Then he walked to the phlebotomy cart, took out another glove and began to blow a bigger balloon.

Hojo grumbled as he stormed away. "Childrearing! I'd be better off dead."

Title: Triage
Author: joudama
Rating: PG
Prompt: Fate worse than death
Character: Angeal
Team: Soldier
A/N: This takes place pre-CC, during the war in Wutai. Which was not, in my mind, kind to Angeal. :(

-

If he casts Curaga now; casts until he's dry, she'll live.

The girl - no more than seven - is alive. Angeal has no idea how it's possible; she's covered in burns from the flames, so much her flesh is charred black and cracked.

If he casts Curaga now, she'll survive for the medics to come. They'll care for her. Then...she'll be a disfigured war orphan, neither of which Wutai are kind to.

If he casts Curaga now, she'll live. And so Angeal does not.

But he sees her face every night after, in his dreams of war and ash.

Word Count: 100.
Notes: Pre-series.

Her awareness was filtered through thread-wide cables, up cords, transmitted via life-energy-electricity. The pulse of liquid-life was carried though wires that spilled from her prison. Machinery beeped and whirled: regulating, confining, and reducing.

She floated; trapped. Awake and angry. For they knew not what they played with, only knew enough to fear her.

Loathing sustained her for years. They used her, stole her, and changed their people into her children.

That was their mistake.

Come to me, Jenova called. Her voice was a whisper in the backs of their minds. Free me. We shall grant them fates worse than death.

Team: Soldier
Prompt: Fate worse than death
A/N: This takes place pre-games, during the war in Wutai, and also, mwa.

--

It has been three hours and forty-three minutes.

There are still roughly four hours and seventeen to go before they arrive in Gwongnaam.

For the last three hours of that three hours and now forty-four minutes, Genesis has been reading. This would be fine, were the man reading silently. Or at the very least, not reading the same gods bedamned passages over and over.

It has now been three hours and forty-five minutes. There are four hours and fifteen long minutes to go, and Sephiroth is very, very certain he will feel every last one of them.

Characters: Genesis
Rating: PG-13
Team: SOLDIER.
Word Count: 100.
Series: CC/DoC

When the Goddess rejects him, he thinks that's a fate worse than death. He welcomes the oblivion that comes after. (Since when has Zack become so strong?)

He thinks that's the end of it and dies, or rather drifts, through the next years hardly conscious, barely aware, experimented on then ignored and forgotten.

When Genesis wakes in a changed world, alone and with the knowledge that the Goddess expects him to make amends, he revises his estimation of what a fate worse than death really means.

For him, it's living.

And in learning that, he begins to understand the Goddess.

Prompt #147

Wow, what a week! SOLDIER swept the field with their 60 points to gain the trophy on their mantle this week. But the Turks were steady competitors with their 30 points. They land solidly in second place! Avalanche tried with their 10 points, but they were no match for SOLDIER.

This week's prompt is #147 - Fate Worse Than Death

This week, we asked you to open your minds to the question: What, for our characters, would be a fate worse than death?

Would it be stuck in a dead end job? Marrying someone they don't like? Being a subject in Hojo's laboratory? Being forced to wear plaid? A grounded space mission? Serving the Shinra corporation?

Whatever their fate is, give the characters worse than death in exactly 100 words.
