Marlene calls him “Papa.” And Barret has to admit, that feels better than it has any right to. He’d always wanted to be a papa.

She’s too young to understand why people look at them twice when they pass, or why not everyone believes him when he says he’s her father. It shouldn’t matter, dammit, and it doesn’t matter to him, but there were people who might find out the truth and try to use it against ‘em, somehow. Blackmail, or something even worse.

He has to tell her someday. He will, when she’s old enough to understand. Not yet.
