What Partners Are For/Share and Share Alike/A Case or Two of the Sniffles

Reno wasn't stupid. Or flaky. He was observant when it counted.

It was the little things that tipped him off when Rude was feeling rough.

He couldn't see his partner squint behind his shades when his head ached, but there were wrinkles around his mouth and between his eyes.

When Rude had a cough, the throat clearings and tie adjustments that usually meant embarrassment came frequently and unprovoked.

And, since Rude stifled his sneezes into complete silence, Reno could recognize a case of the sniffles by the conspicuous lack of handkerchief in the breast pocket of his otherwise meticulous suit.

It happened every winter. One of them would pick up a cold or flu, would come into work sniffling and snorting and coughing, insisting he (or she; Elena was as guilty as the rest of them) was perfectly fine. After a few hours of listening to the hacking and sneezing, Tseng (or if Tseng was the guilty one, Rufus) would send the ailing one home in hopes of containing it. And it was always too late. The contagion would've spread around, each catching it in turn, acting the same as the first had, blame passed around just like the bug.

Growing up in the slums, Reno'd caught just about anything major before he'd hit puberty. They didn't often vaccinate against the standard childhood illnesses in the poorest neighborhoods under the Plate.

Problem was, just 'cause he'd gotten all of the biggies out of the way, the little things weren't just going to leave him alone. He usually spent a good part of the winter with one cold after another, going through tissues, cough drops, and pain meds at alarming rates. Rude was used to seeing Reno's nose rubbed raw enough to match his hair until the warm weather returned.
