"Boys, come meet your baby brother," Papa called, and the boys stampeded into the room where their mother lay drenched in sweat and exhaustion. On her chest was a tiny red bundle. "Gentle, now," Papa warned as they reached out to touch.
The older boy let his finger be captured by a tiny, pudgy hand. "Wow, he's strong," he exclaimed.
"You bet he is." Papa puffed with pride, sharing a glowing look with Mama. "Little Cid here's got a blacksmith's grip. He'll be capable of just about anything when he gets big." The boys shared a glance, disbelieving but fond.

Professor Gast knelt by Ifalna's bedside, his heart captured as it always was by her beauty and strength. She gritted her teeth and let her breath hiss out between them as she labored, legs quivering with pain and effort.
"Goddess," he murmured, and he didn't know if it was a prayer or an oath.
"Ancestors," Ifalna whispered. The midwife gasped as their child emerged.
"It's a girl," she said, and Ifalna laughed with tears in her eyes as she reached out. "A perfect little lass."
"Of course she is," Gast said, curling his arm around his beloved goddess and godschild.
