“Don’t point, Cloud,” said Angeal Hewley. “Genesis, what on earth have you been up to?”

“You’re covered in soot,” Zack said.

“Just chimney sweep luck,” Genesis said, tipping his hat at the sweep exiting the alley behind him.

“Genesis,” said Angeal Hewley, “What did you do?”

Genesis glanced at the younger ones and watched his words. “Well, you know, it’s good luck if you…”

“If you blow them a kiss, Genesis,” Angeal Hewley finished.

“Oooooh.”

“Jessie?” He doesn’t sound right. Probably pinned too. Maybe got some broken ribs.

My ribs are fine, I think. Can’t feel my toes, but we’ll see about that later. “You got Biggs with you?”

“… He’s here.” He doesn’t sound good and Biggs is real quiet for some reason. Cloud will come though. Get all this rubble off with those SOLDIER arms. We’ll regroup, restock and recover. Then we’ll give Shinra the asskicking they deserve.

"How?" The girl, Aerith, was almost childlike in her questioning, with her voice strangely sweet and her eyes so wide.

Cloud refused to stare. "What do you mean?"

"How does she know?"

Cloud shrugged. "She knows. It doesn't matter how." He noticed Aerith had stopped on the path. "What's wrong?"

Aerith took a breath and let her voice ring. "How does she knoooooooow you love her?"

Cloud groaned. "Oh god, you're singing now?"

And now they had him cornered in the hall. He was as she remembered, silver-haired and proud. She felt the fire blazing up inside. A lifetime of fury surged at the chance for revenge. She stepped forward and looked him in the eye.

"Hello. My name is Tifa Lockhart. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Sephiroth held the glove balloon in both hands. The inflated fingers wagged cheekily over the face Gast had drawn. "I'm playing catch," said the boy.

"By yourself?" Hojo asked. "That's ridiculous!" And he stabbed the balloon with a pen.

Sephiroth stared at the shredded rubber for a while. Then he walked to the phlebotomy cart, took out another glove and began to blow a bigger balloon.

Hojo grumbled as he stormed away. "Childrearing! I'd be better off dead."

She took her cue from the flowers. They were tied to the earth and didn’t trust the one with the too-bright eyes.

But he meant no harm, no harm at all. They grew accustomed. So did she. When she stood to greet him, they leaned with her. They turned where they stood and followed him like sunlight. She began to let him tend them. The flowers learned to love it, leaning in to kiss his skin with velvet softness. So she did too.

It barely lasted a second. She was still pondering it when he pulled her in for more.

It’s madness, Angeal thinks, to walk away. From everything, from all they fought for. Glory (but not enough), power (but not where it counted), money (didn’t really matter). Still, it was what they had and they had earned it. Now to walk away, that was madness.

But Genesis was hurt and not thinking clearly. A little madness was forgivable. If he hurt a few people to find his answers, it was a means to an end. Angeal would let Genesis do what was needed. He would follow Genesis as far as he needed to go. Love. That was madness too.
