Cid took a step back, double-checking what he thought he had seen in his peripheral vision. Barret was at a low, lace-covered table, on a little chair that didn’t look like it should hold his weight. Marlene passed him a tray of cookies and served some up for her moogle toys. Cid scratched his head. “Barret, what are you doing?”
“I’m at a tea party, foo’. What’s it look like?” Barret lifted a tiny pink teacup in his good hand, pinkie out. “You want in?”
Cid set his spear up against the wall. “Sure, why not.” Marlene made good tea.

“So, there are differences between one and the other and those differences are what make boys, boys, and girls, girls.” Barret cleared his throat.
“A penis, Dad?”
“What?”
Marlene shrugged. “I’ve seen Denzel’s when he forgot to lock the bathroom door. Cloud’s too. One time he spilled hot coffee on his lap and had to yank everything off before he got burned.”
“You seen ‘em.” Barret went numb.
“Yep. How old do boys have to get before they start growing hair there?”
Barret stood. “Tell you what, Marlene. I’ll tell you when I’m done having a little talk with Cloud.”

After the operation, Barret had plenty to occupy his time. There was Marlene to see about. His clumsy left hand learned the work of two.
There was physical therapy for the new arm. His body had to adjust to the weight of a metal gun. The rest of him needed training too, to make up for the imbalance of the burden on one side. It was some time before he had the energy, even in half-sleep, to consider more personal needs.
He considered it a stroke of luck that he hadn’t shot his balls off the first time he tried.

on 2011-06-09 01:09 am (UTC)I like the first one for Cid's nonchalance about being invited to the dollies tea-party, and his reason for accepting. Of course he's willing to take tea with Marlene's dolls and her dad - good tea is good tea.

on 2011-06-09 01:32 am (UTC)The sight of a big guy like Barret successfully sitting in a kiddy chair would make anybody pause, but once Cid processed all that, tea is tea.
