Zack crouched behind the tree with a pebble in his hand. Three deer were before him, calmly grazing. He threw the rock and startled the deer away a breath before a shot cracked the air.
“Dammit,” Rufus swore, shouldering his rifle. “Missed again! Can you believe it? Let’s keep going.”
Zack scuttled through the shrubbery along the deer path. Pebble number six came to his fingers. The morning’s game began again.
The sahib aimed. So did Zack. The rifle clicked. Another clicked right in his ear. A shot fired and a deer lay dead. The pebble fell from Zack’s hand.

“Found him, Sir!” Reno said. “He’s been distracting the deer all morning.” Zack did not speak the language but he understood the rifle butt poking him in the back well enough. He stood to face the hunter.
“That explains it,” Rufus said. “I can’t miss five times in a row for no reason.” He leveled his gun at Zack. “So, you’re a fast runner, eh? Keeping up with the deer all day?”
Zack made no reply.
“Save this one,” Rufus said in Zack’s own language. The rifle shifted and fired and before Zack could react, a rabbit lay dead too.
Title: The Devil's Due
Characters: Elmyra, Godo.
Fandom: FFVII, Lagaan
Rating: PG
Team: SOLDIER

Elmyra had been hysterical, shrieking after the messenger to suck their blood and be done with it. The women had taken her away to calm her. No one could blame her. Double the tax? In this drought? They would all starve.
“There’s only one thing to do,” said the headman, “We have to go talk to Raja Godo right away and ask him to intercede with the Shinra on our behalf.”
They found the Raja paying his own tax, making pleasant conversation at some kind of sporting match with the very devils who crushed his people beneath their heels.
Title: Hotheads
Characters: Zack
Fandom: FFVII, Lagaan
Rating: PG-13
Team: SOLDIER
Word Count: 100
Only the hotheadedness of youth would warrant taking the devil up on his offer, and Zack was considered more hotheaded than most. Even he had to admit Triple tax was a heavy price, but three years without tax was equally within reach. They could do it. Zack knew they could. They would teach Rufus to bargain their actual lives against the outcome of some silly children’s game.
But then the mob from the other villages in the district arrived, angry, armed with sticks and looking for Zack, intent on teaching him a thing or two about bargaining with lives themselves.
Title: The Other Woman

“Nothing’s wrong.” Aerith turned away, wiping her face hurriedly and hiding it in her scarf.
“Oh, really? What is with you today,” Zack asked.
“As if you don’t know,” Aerith said. “The instant Cissnei memsahib comes around you hover around her like a bee on a flower.”
“Of course I stay close. She’s teaching us how to play cricket.”
“Oh please. You think I don’t know which way the wind is blowing?”
Something clicked in Zack’s mind. “You’re jealous.”
“I am not!”
“Yes, you are, you’re jealous.”
Aerith rose in a huff. “See if I ever talk to you again.”
Title: Answering the Call

The ball flew high and far. A stranger caught it. He was a large man, imposing and angry. “Hey,” Zack called, “throw our ball back.”
The man advanced, running up to the pitch, his one good arm arching for the throw. The wickets tumbled in complete defeat.
“My name is Barret,” the big man said. “I want to be part of any fight against the Shinra raj.”
Zack scratched his head. “This is a fight with ball and sticks, not guns and knives.”
“I can still fight,” Barret said. “I was in their corps once. I played their game before.”
