It was the night after his first real mission. Light from the hallway fell into his apartment as he opened the front door.

Everything was as he left it. The couches by the bookshelf forming an L around the coffee table, the painting on the wall, the dinner table by the window, the makeshift shrine in the corner. There was the faded scent of incense, ginger, cooked rice and carpet.

In a daze, he stepped inside, mud falling from his boots and just stood there, covered from head to toe in blood, grime and gunpowder.

This was a stranger’s home.

Kneeling on the floor where he’d fallen, Rufus slapped his hand away, hard.

His limbs shook under the strain as he tried to climb back into the wheelchair with his last shreds of strength. The Geostigma attacks grew more numerous and violent by the week, leaving him weak and exhausted. But Rufus fiercely resisted any assistance.

Frustrated by the imposed helplessness, Tseng stood by his side and watched as he struggled to lift himself high enough to get into the seat.

“Rufus...” he started, remembering the lectures the old president had given his son, and extended his hand once more. “Having someone help you doesn’t mean you’re a failure, it just means you’re not in it alone.”

A/N: I blame my colleague for this. :) She gave me the prompt “reincarnation as a flower pot”. I turned it into a pun. (“Huā pén” = 1. flower pot, 2. feminine man)

Huā pén (Flower pot)

A sudden violent movement shook the bed and jolted him awake. Drowsy, he forced open his eyes and found himself looking at Tseng’s sitting form in the gloom. He was staring at the far end of the room with a puzzled and disturbed look on his face.

“What is it?” Rufus asked with a voice hoarse from sleep.

Tseng looked at him. “I had the weirdest dream... That I’d been reincarnated as a flower pot. All bright pink and with flowers painted on it.” He shuddered. “This is your fault, Rufus, talking me into your bed and calling me pretty.”
