Title: Escape 1.0
Fandom: FFVII
Characters: Cloud
Team: SOLDIER
Prompt: Dreams

Aim high, someone had told him, maybe his mother, maybe not. Aim so high that even if you fail, at least you’d have risen among the stars. So Cloud aimed for SOLDIER, for the strength and the pride and the glory, and for the General, shining at the front of it all, a hero, stern and tall.

Cloud could only imagine what it would be like to be under that command, to give his life in service to perfection. He was not the only Nibelheim boy to have such a dream, but he was the only one to chase it.

A cold shower washed away the day’s blood and grime and the lingering taint of a thousand prying eyes. He wished they would go away, all of them. He wished he could make them.

Not enough that he did what they asked, that he gave his life, his entire being in service. They wanted more. They wanted his face and his words and his time. They wanted him on their walls, on their screens, on their stage, precious puppet.

One day, he would go somewhere to be forgotten, to live out his days in quiet solitude. A man could dream.

The dreams were almost the worst of it, little snippets of might have been. If he had passed, if he had been accepted, if he had been taller, or stronger or smarter. If he had made SOLDIER, then he would not have to spend all night on patrol, a helmeted, nameless nobody.

All night he marched. All day he trained. And when he slept he saw himself in SOLDIER First Class black, sword in hand, eyes aglow. The dreaming hurt, seeing how it might have been, but waking and realizing that it was not was the very worst of all.

SOLDIER hearing never did get quite good enough to hear bowels turning to water, a small mercy. Rank had its privileges but scaring the crap out of everyone who crossed his path was not one of them.

He handed the day’s files to the current sacrificial lamb. He wanted to tell the boy to calm down, that he wouldn’t bite. He wanted to tell him to take off the stifling helmet, to talk like ordinary men. Instead he sent the boy on his way and looked forward to a day when rank did not stand between him and all mankind.

“You like Nibelheim?”

“I like it.”

“Mom’s… okay?”

“Your mom’s fine. Great cook, too, by the way.”

“We’ll fish tomorrow?”

“Sure thing, Spike.”

The mako took Cloud away again. Zack watched the wakefulness leave the boy’s eyes. The body floated like a doll in the tank, with no will of its own. Zack wasn’t sure exactly what Cloud saw in his mako haze but he didn’t dare hurt the boy with the truth either, the few times something surfaced in that flat, lifeless gaze. Let the boy dream of Nibelheim as it had been. It was the only Nibelheim left.

One cell for another. Story of his life. Glass and steel gave way to ice and dark and a body that could not move to his bidding. No matter, he said. His mind was free to wander, freer than it had ever been.

But what good was wandering the world without the means to hold it? It was years before he had the strength again to find a way, to use hands that were not his own but at his disposal. It made for a wider cage, but caged he was regardless. He bided his time and dreamed of freedom.

They were old thoughts and worn-out longings that Cloud thought he had long put to rest. On cold nights, on lonely days, they came upon him, found him at his weakest and reminded him of the life he had once wanted. In half-sleep he felt large hands on his body, not harsh or brutal as he had known them before. Soft instead, caressing, coaxing pleasure from his flesh and sweet cries from his throat.

He had not known how to name this part of his childhood dreams and with the man dead and gone, he would not name it now.

Death was but a long sleep and with it came time to dream. What remained of him fell to it with a vengeance, plotting pain and punishment in the wisps of lifestream he still called his. He would grow stronger as the years passed by. He would have form again.

One day, someday, the little upstart would be here too, within reach, and then strong hands could close around him, bruise the little throat and make his spirit suffer for putting his better down here for so long. The day would come. Dark lifestream coiled, restless and dreaming of revenge.
