Author’s Note: In “Crisis Core,” there are a few scenes that repeat or echo between Zack’s life and Cloud’s. This is the one that hit me in the gut.
He struggled against the pull of the mako-dreams, desperate to find and cling to some kind of reality before it was too late. The image burned into his memory: his friend, his mentor, great sword across his back. Walking away.
He had tried, and… had he failed? Had he disappointed this man to whom he owed his life? He couldn’t remember. There was only fog.
He reached for the retreating figure; his fingers closed on smoke.
Later, after… something… had happened, the memory knotted in on itself: blood, and feathers, and so, so many mistakes.
Only the sword remained unchanged.
