The train stood in the station, the chimney puffing out clouds of smoke. Rufus glanced through the window, waiting for it to depart and take him to work.

 

Suddenly, he straightened up. There, walking about nervously, was the black cub he'd found yesterday. How did she get here?

 

Quickly, he got out of the train. "What are you doing here?"

 

The cub happily mewled and ran towards him.

 

Rufus smiled, touched. "You can't come. Go back home."

 

The cub sadly looked at him and whined.

 

Glancing at the train, he sighed. Then he opened his bag. "Okay, but stay quiet."

"Heads up." Cissnei said over the speakers, "You got one more drone incoming. This one looks different."

 

Reeve and Barret, both looking worse for wear in their charred battle suits, looked up. There it was, right over head. The heavily armoured drone landed and the helmet opened to reveal Dyne's smug face.

 

"Good to be back."

 

"This ain't gonna be good." Barret commented.

 

Dyne flung his arms to the side and two long cables, white with electricity, came out of the suit.

 

"I've got something special for this guy." Barret stepped forward. "I'm gonna bust his bunker with the Ex-Wife."

Zack crouched behind the tree with a pebble in his hand. Three deer were before him, calmly grazing. He threw the rock and startled the deer away a breath before a shot cracked the air.

“Dammit,” Rufus swore, shouldering his rifle. “Missed again! Can you believe it? Let’s keep going.”

Zack scuttled through the shrubbery along the deer path. Pebble number six came to his fingers. The morning’s game began again.

The sahib aimed. So did Zack. The rifle clicked. Another clicked right in his ear. A shot fired and a deer lay dead. The pebble fell from Zack’s hand.

If there was an award ceremony for last week's acting performances, top honors would certainly go to SOLDIER. After all, they did have Genesis on their side. They take the trophy with 190 points. The Turks took second place with 140 points for Reno's antics and persistence. Avalanche came in a sad third with 10 points.

Author's Notes: From a very very old idea of how Aerith's spirit might return to the other side of life.

A new chapter as a family. They were already one, but Tifa couldn't deny the strings of sentimentality attached to the new life growing within her, one that was hers and Cloud's biologically. Not that Denzel and Marlene were any less theirs, but--

She couldn't make her feelings make sense to herself, but that was alright. They were happy ones. It hadn't been an easy pregnancy but she had gotten through it all right, admittedly with quiet pleas to Aerith when something felt wrong.

But when the baby was born with green eyes, Tifa wondered whose new beginning it was.
