Reno had often seen Rufus rummage through his wardrobe for suited clothes. Whenever he had guard duty during an arranged date, he wondered what the man would put on next. It was almost always something different. Always fantastic to see. And always black and white.

 

Sometimes he and his colleagues would even bet on the number of pieces that would be black or white.

 

So, when Rufus showed up on his doorstep, ready for the 'evening of good fun' Reno had promised him, he was stunned to see him in black trousers, a beige jacket... and a deep blue shirt.

His brand-new suit hung loosely around his body, tailored for a growth spurt. Wide-eyed and silent, the not-yet-a-man, no-longer-a-boy stared at shelves lined with hair dye. Wider than the width of his arms, taller than he himself. There was fire red, auburn, burgundy, scarlet...

 

His messy, black hair clung to his face, partially covering the fresh tattoos that hid a single, thin scar on his cheekbone.

 

"Cut your hair." the commander had said. "Tomorrow starts your life as a Turk. There is no place for your past here."

 

He welcomed the chance to bury the ugly remains of his past.
